Shun complacency, Modi tells partymen

Standard

An emotional Narendra Modi exhorted his partymen to shun complacency and pull up their socks for the upcoming elections. Speaking at a state-level workers meeting in Koba, Modi said the BJP in Gujarat was facing a problem of plenty.

“We have plenty of workers, resources and ticket aspirants. Earlier, when we were not in power, we had more dedicated workers who used to move around on bicycles serving the party. Today, the parking lot of this venue is full with expensive cars but we have become complacent,” he said a gathering which included senior leaders like Nirmala Sitharaman, Om Mathur and Balbir Punj apart from state BJP president R C Faldu and BJP’s national vice-president Parshottam Rupala. However, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha and an MP from Gujarat, Arun Jaitley could not make it to the important meeting.

Senior BJP leaders hinted that the party’s focus during the upcoming elections would be women and young voters. The Gujarat chief minister even stopped short of saying that the party will field more candidates from these two segments.

Hinting at massive changes in the candidates to fight the anti-incumbency factor, Modi told the state executive that it was important to understand the “limitations of delimitation”. “We should accept change as the need of the hour,” he said.

Former Gujart BJP minister and Keshubhai Patel supporter Nalin Bhatt has decided to rejoin the BJP.

Bhatt will meet Gujarat BJP President RC Faldu at 3.30 pm today. National Vice President of BJP Shri Parshottam Rupala is going to address a press conference today evening.

Bhatt left BJP after Narendra Modi didn’t give him ticket to fight the Gujarat assembly polls in 2002 due to corruption charges. Bhatt later joined BSP, and eventually formed Dindayal Seva Samiti. Bhatt tasted worst defeat when he contested the assembly polls after he left the BJP. In the recent past he was regularly seen with Keshubhai Patel and Gordhan Zadafia.
