No promise on BJP ticket from Modi, Kanodias may join Congress

Standard

Desperate to fight the assembly election, Gujarati film star and former BJP MLA Naresh Kanoadia, his elder brother and former BJP MP Mahesh Kanodia and Gujarati film star son Hitu Kanodia are likely to join Congress party, most probably this week.

Mahesh Kanoadia(76) was elected to Lok Sabha on BJP ticket for four terms from north Gujarat’s Patan seat(SC), but was denied ticket in 2009 after Patan turned into an unreserved seat in the new delimitation regime.

Younger brother Naresh Kanoadia(70) was elected as MLA from central Gujarat’s Karjan seat in 2002 but lost the election in 2007.

Naresh and Hitu Kanodia(42) were to be inducted into the Congress party at the Asarwa(SC) rally on Monday in Ahmedabad. But Kanodia wanted to meet Chief Minister Narendra Modi first. They wanted to explore their chances of getting a ticket from the BJP itself. Accordingly they met the Chief Minister on Tuesday but failed to get any promise for a ticket.

For their political existence and to save themselves from forced political retirement, Kanoadias are now heading towards the Congress party. Both Naresh and Hitu are ready to contest from any seat reserved for SC. Congress leadership has agreed to this.

Impact:

Kanoadias dance, play music, sing rural Gujarati songs and rock the stage in election rallies. Mahesh Kanoadia can sing in female voice too. Kanoadias pen down special songs for campaign and sign on the stage. Their road shows ahead of the Municipal Corporation elections in SC dominated areas had attracted a good response. Naresh Kanodia had lost Karjan assembly poll on BJP ticket in 2007 by a margin of around 1200 votes. Hitu wants to contest from Ahmedabad’s Asarwa seat which is reserved for SC. But if Congress party fields him, the local Congress aspirants are likely to react negatively.
